This was third or fourth item on ITV news last night. I think it might be people deliberately becoming involved in the breakdown of one individual to distract themselves from the crumbling of everything else around them.

I really don't think anyone's involved in the 'breakdown' of this woman, other than herself...

Ah but the gift of being born in poverty is that it keeps on giving.

One shouldn't draw any kind of general lessons from this stupid woman - whose awful song "Valerie" is a dreadful assault on my sensibilities, at least.

Have you, laban, ever read Vanity Fair? Becky Sharp says something to the effect that "had I but had £500 a year I would have been a good woman".

As it was she lived on credit and had to resort to all kinds of conniving tricks to make her way in the world. Circumstance had led her to become a chancer, not inherent character flaw. She could, I suppose, have led a life of wretched servitude patronised and thrown the odd crumb by some passing religious personage. But that doesn't seem much of an attractive option somehow

Ah the socialist speaks!

She was a shit because of her poverty and by generalisation all people in poverty become shits. Pure automatons incapable of independent reflection. We better not examine the actual claim too closely, lest we find she attended some lady's finishing school.

Way I would put it is to use cigarette smoking as an analogy. You might not get lung cancer but you are mostly certainly upping the odds.

"Pure automatons incapable of independent reflection."

If you'd read the book, anon, you would realise that she came to that piece of self-knowledge through reflection upon her past life. Your doctrine puts you very much in the camp of the fortunate, anon. Personally I'd like to see how "moral" all these liberal economic "feelosphers"(Cobbett) are when push comes to shove.

"We better not examine the actual claim too closely, lest we find she attended some lady's finishing school."

Well she did, of sorts. It gave her the specious plausibility necessary to enter "society" and pull quite a few fast ones. Much like Bullingdon Dave and his mates I suppose.

Surely the real question is what kind of 38 year old man files an assault report after getting slapped by an anorexic dwarf ?

Being slapped by Amy Winehouse is only cool if you don't have to end the anecdote 'and then I went to the police and whined like a little girl'

Well, to be fair, if he'd belted her in return, he'd no doubt be the villain of the piece.

He should have just laughed it off...

He was smacked on the head by a smackhead!
