Thank you a lot.
The pictures to click through to are wonderful. They seem somehow to appeal to more senses than just the sight, and they pay homage to the power of light.
Art of this calibre is just what is needed to wake up the tired and jaded eye to the beauty that still exists round us but which our horrible modern lives cause us to neglect.
I liked your mention elsewhere of "The Galloping Major". That too was a childhood favourite of mine: so too was "The Boyhood of Raleigh" and my father could never stop telling me about "Last Night in the Old Home". As you say, let's hear it for those much-maligned Victorians. GKC puts in a good word for them in the opening pages of his Autobiography, and Arthur Machen seconds Gilbert in HIS autobiographical writings.

Thanks Laban, I had not heard of this artist before. Absolutely stunning art.

John Atkinson Grimshaw is pretty well known in Leeds for his moonlit paintings of the city. There are a number of them in the Leeds City Art Gallery which is well worth a look if your are in the area. Many of the Leeds streetscapes he painted can still be seen, although sadly Park Row has changed entirely from the time of his picture.

You can look at that picture of Boar Lane, and you can hear the clamour of boots on the pavement, you can feel the sting of the rain on your face, and smell the waft of toasted teacakes from an open doorway.

Thanks Laban. Now why didn't this bloke exhibit his underpants or a pickled sheep? He'd be much better known then.
