Aiiieeee!

"For Bush may come, and Blair may go, but I go on forever"

She's back. And while she seems less unbalanced than of old, her idiosyncratic mental hobgoblins haven't gone away, you know.

"Beneath the surface glamour and exciting TV shows about death, America still yearns for savage modesty and the right to burn uppity women."

Except they don't want to burn the uppity Sarah Palin or Christine O'Donnell, something which Ms Kennedy finds both inexplicable and infuriating.

She's Back

'Twas eighteen months ago that AL Kennedy announced to a stunned world that her next novel would be "a historical novel set in World War II but it will reflect the other war. It would have been about Iraq even if it had nothing to with war".

Well if 'Day' is about Iraq, both Guardian (Ursula le Guin, no less) and Indie reviewers seem to have missed it. Maybe she changed her mind.

Her Observer book-plug interview is another of those bleak, self-deprecating jobbies in which she specialises and which make you think she really ought to find some chap into hillwalking, move to a small Borders town, go to church on Sundays and have a couple of weans before it's too late for her. Maybe she just needs someone to love like the rest of us.

Still mad as a fish though. The revamped website features a host of links to lefty 'Bush conspiracy' sites, some no longer in business like 911dossier.co.uk ('Auto Insurance Quotes, Ringtones'), the overwhelming majority American. What's wrong with good old British paranoia ? Strangely, for someone who rails against capitalism, she thinks the idea that artists should pay less tax is 'sensible'.

And she's really gorn and done it now (hat-tip - Norm).

"When I look at the UK, it reminds me of the Nazi era. Blair is a deranged war criminal, and I have little hope that Brown is any better.

"And again, we are stigmatising one individual religious group, this time it is the Muslims. A section of our society is being marked out as criminals. That makes me angry."

After various politicians and Muslim and Jewish writers described her views as 'a lot of rubbish', 'absurd, repulsive and dangerous', 'childish, silly and over the top' and 'a bit extreme, to say the least' Ms Kennedy came back with a cracking one-liner.

"Did I say these things? I think I probably did but in the context of a much longer conversation. And I am not in any way comparing the situation to the Shoah. Of course there are no gas chambers or concentration camps. What we have right now, is not the way the Jews were being treated in 1940 or 1941, but maybe where they were around 1936."

If her stand-up comedy can match this she should be on TV.

UPDATE - Edinburgh blogger Rosie Bell isn't too impressed with the 1936 comparison either. Hard but fair methinks.

Your great pal Al
Is a stupid gal
Reason's enemy.
The Guardian prints
Her words of mince
A waste of any tree.
Her frothing rants,
Are total pants,
Count how many flee
From the loony dribbles
And paranoid scribbles
Of A L Kennedy.

Remember AL Kennedy ?

In the days before Comment Is Free, the author AL Kennedy provided entertainment to the masses with her Guardian columns, denunciations of the Bush/Blair axis of evil leavened with her particular fetishes - blood, Christians, reality TV, depleted uranium. Their fascination for evil right-wing bloggers was the sense that at any moment her head might go bang. Some of her columns seemed exceeding close to the edge.

But the pleasure was always a little tinged with guilt. As I wrote in 2004 :

Reading AL Kennedy's Guardian output is a little like watching the Stooges during Iggy's most wasted period, or more recently Shane MacGowan or Pete Doherty - the edge is the feeling that you're watching someone falling to bits right in front of you.

Great wits are sure to madness near allied,
And thin partitions do their bounds divide.

She's doing stand-up comedy these days, as well as apparently writing a WWII novel which (yawn) is all about Iraq. As the Times put it, 'hearing AL Kennedy is doing stand-up at the Edinburgh festival is a little like hearing Morrissey has been cast in Singin’ in the Rain'. Getting mixed reviews ('Emo Philips's lost sister' said the Evening Standard, advising her to 'stick to the day job') - and the depleted uranium fetish is alive and well.

Where was I ? She was on Radio 4's ghastly liberal Front Row (RealAudio, till next Wed, last item) arts prog the other night - and the presenter 'licked ass' in traditional FR style - telling her how brave she was.

"That's not bravery", said our heroine, "the audience aren't allowed to kill me. Going to the shops in Beirut - that's bravery".

Grudging respect, sister !

(It's probably just as well she's not on CiF. I think she'd get ripped to shreds.)

AL Kennedy - "Okay, this may sound crazy"

Tragically for aficionados, it doesn't sound genuinely, full-on hide-the-knives crazy. Very poor form. Going through the motions after a 6-month Guardian layoff. Living off past glory.

Subject : disposing of politicians who've done ... well, not sure.

Madness rating : moderate to poor, rain later
Phase of Moon : nearly full - (on Feb 9) so all the more of a let-down.

Mentions of
Depleted Uranium : Yes
Reality TV : Yes
Christians : No
Porn : No
Blood : Yes
Celebrities : Yes
Bush'n'Blair : Blair ("increasingly mad eyes"), Bush ("crushing the testicles of the person's child")
Swearing : No

Ms Kennedy is another one who won't be passing her culture to her non-existent posterity.

The usual 'edge' of her work may be being distilled into this - her stand-up comedy show (don't think I'll be taking the kids). While it's not the bravery of a squaddie in Basra, she is a trouper. Grudging respect.

Oh. My. God.

AL Kennedy is writing a new novel.

You'll never guess what it's about.

"FRANKFURT, Germany (AFP) Friday October 21, 2005
Scottish author A.L. Kennedy said that she was writing a new novel set in World War II in part inspired by the war in Iraq , which she bitterly opposes.
"It's a historical novel set in World War II but it will reflect the other war. It would have been about Iraq even if it had nothing to with war," she told AFP at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Kennedy has regularly attacked the British government over joining the US-led invasion of Iraq."

I noticed her recent absence from the Guardian. What I want to know is this. Some of her fixations (blood for one) will fit into a novel set in WW2 - the Germans even used depleted uranium shells in the conflict. But how is she's going to get porn, Bush'n'Blair, Christians, reality TV, home shopping channels and the legendary plastic thanksgiving turkey into 1939-45 ?

I hope the whole novel is written in this style - could be a comedy classic.

UPDATE - the German WW2 uranium WASN'T depleted - it was a full-on U238/235 mix with much more radioactivity than depleted uranium. In 1943 tungsten (which they used for their armour-piercing solid shot) supplies from Portugal were stopped and Albert Speer turned over the German stockpile of 1200 tons of uranium ore to replace the tungsten. I suppose it's better than what they could have made from it.

"willfully ignorant, vicious and worse"

AL Kennedy, writing in the Scottish Sunday Herald, makes the arduous trip from St Andrews to Gleneagles, and shows how American TV evangelists killed millions in Mozambique.

Note - the usual Guardian edge-of-breakdown style has been severely moderated in deference to her Scottish readers - no bums, blood or depleted uranium.

UPDATE - I've been informed that on Wednesday 6th July AL Kennedy was on the Today programme talking about Scotland and the G8. Does anyone have the Realaudio link ?

Saner Every Day

AL Kennedy again disappoints. No Iraqi blood or depleted uranium, no fat consumers or evil Christians - just plain factual stuff that everyone knows - about how the US isn't a democracy. I think it's something to do with the phases of the moon - it's new at the moment. More research needed to see if the most challenging pieces are full moon jobs.

Tim Worstall and Scott decipher the entrails.

"Four more years of industrial death and insanity"

I've been looking forward to this one. AL Kennedy on the US election results.

Scott Burgess is also impressed.

Thanks to the Dumb One for a link to this, some of the funniest stuff I've seen on the Menace Of The Christian Right.

"If we take one of George Bush's speeches, for example," he told Diane, "and replace every mention of 'God' or 'faith' or 'family values' with phrases like 'Jesus hates fags' or 'Kill the abortionists', it paints a very different picture from what the Evangelicals want the American people to believe about their extremist agenda."

"Surely," Diane asked incredulously, "you aren't suggesting that the religious-right encourages violence against homosexuals?"

"In a recent study at Evergreen State College," Platz explained, "we sat several so-called 'christian conservative families' in a room under the pretense that there would be a free screening of Spongebob Squarepants. Instead, we presented a series of gay porno films from the late 70's. Sensors attached to the subjects registered alarming levels of discomfort. Several participants displayed an almost simian instinct to protect their young - shielding their children's eyes from the screen or even threatening the projectionist with physical harm. Apparently, the Christian concept of 'brotherly love' doesn't extend to people who practice it physically."

Diane touched her pen to her lips, her trademark sign that the guest has just said something deeply profound.

"Is there any correlation between these so-called "morals" and strange, pointy-buildings that many conservatives are seen entering on Sundays?" she asked.

Liberal Larry is as great a genius as AL Kennedy. I'm not sure I can tell the two apart.

"Four more years of war. Four more years of innocent women and children burned alive by U.S. smart bombs designed solely for that purpose. Four more years of not being able to enjoy Paris in the summertime without being showered with spittle. Four more years of unchecked environmental destruction. Four more years of the wholesale shredding of the Bill of Rights, with Asscroft peeking at my library records and innocent Americans being dragged off to Gitmo in the dead of night."

And I love this.

Tears welled in my eyes as I sat out on my balcony last night, watching the sea of headlights slowly moving north on I-5 towards Canada. Thousands of my amigos, my comrades, my brothers-in-arms had packed up their VW vans with anything they could smoke and were heading for higher ground. Artisans, actors, poets, musicians, bong craftsmen - a rag tag fleet of rebels on a lonely quest to find their homeworld.

Yesterday, I bid farewell to my best friend Travis, who was sailing to China on a raft made from empty soy milk cartons tied together with macrame'd hemp rope.

Not As Mad As Usual

A rather tedious AL Kennedy piece in today's Guardian. Usual insane premise ("Brits love torture" - bondage maybe), lots of lies, the usual themes ("Our dawn raids and detentions are so quiet, so nicely contained within the Muslim community. The civilians we are bombing and irradiating as you read this are so far away"), but it's rather dull. There's not the barely-suppressed hysteria, the feeling that her head's about to explode, which makes AL such a riveting read.

It's probably a good thing. Reading AL Kennedy's Guardian output is a little like watching the Stooges during Iggy's most wasted period, or more recently Shane MacGowan or Pete Doherty - the edge is the feeling that you're watching someone falling to bits right in front of you. This is a prime example. Hide the kitchen knives, someone !

Those who want more full-blown madness can visit the virtual shrine. But don't go here. Told you.

UPDATE - Scott Burgess points out a few inaccuracies in her work. I've long given up on that. Good link to this US fan ("If Bush gets into the White House again, I’m not sure I can stay here.") interview though.

"Enough misery and loathing to destabilise the planet"

AL Kennedy is back - and madder than ever. I hope Mr Rochester's got some Jeyes Fluid - that attic room's a health hazard. Get that stuff off the walls for starters.

Read the whole thing - then call an ambulance.

A Problem Shared Is A Problem Halved

British Spin seems to be picking up my sick AL Kennedy fetish. That's the second time he's noticed - not so much that she's not very good (or we'd blog about Zoe Williams every week), but that she seems somewhat deranged.

Reading these commentaries is like talking to an alcholic with extremely bad breath. You know there is a point being made, but the fumes and the stink make you utterly unable to focus on it.

I think a penchant for reading her columns is more like spotting someone in the street with a hideous deformity. It's awful, but can you look away ?

Norm can.

She's At It Again ...

AL Kennedy in the Guardian.

"Last night Mr Blair - contacted by cell phone - also had nothing but praise for the troops who have reduced his state dining room to a glowing shell filled with the stench of burning flesh. "I can only send my heartfelt support to the coalition forces. I think I speak for all of us here when I say that we welcome their cluster bombs, their re-branded napalm and their intermittent tracer fire."

Haven't the Guardian realised yet that they are paying over and again for what is essentially the same article ?

I must get one of her books out of the library. She can't be as bad a writer as she appears, surely.

(The library, declining as it is, is sure to have some. An organisation staffed by nice, middle-class, vaguely feminist women tends to stock a lot of books by vaguely feminist women. I like to measure the 'Waugh/Weldon ratio' in a library - the number of Evelyn Waugh books on the shelves against the number of Fay Weldons. Usually a 1/5 ratio. But try, say, asking for Thomas Moore's poetry, of which there's not one copy in the whole of Gloucestershire's libraries, including the Reference sections.)

An AL Kennedy Primer

"Forget the mindless celebration of Murdoch's media as Christian tank tracks crush the DMU-irradiated Iraqi baby's skull and Halliburton shares rise on hopes of a cholera outbreak in Basra. Go to work, covet the neighbour's wife's girlfriend, watch the home shopping channel and spend everything you borrowed at exorbitant rates from a bank investing in the pharmaceutical companies that are drowning millions of Africans in their own (unfortunately non-Caucasian) blood. You know it makes sense."

Oh, alright. I made that one up. But I flatter myself that a couple more paragraphs like that, and you have the essence of AL Kennedy's Guardian work. This woman makes John Pilger look like a cautious, analytical sort of chap.

A fixation with blood (good to spill if it's English, otherwise bad), hatred of Christians (hypocritical murderers), reality TV (the new opiate of the people), consumer culture (T.N.O.O.T.P. II), the tabloid press (TNOOTP III), democracy (the deluded peasants keep voting for the wrong guys), above all Bush and Blair. For a good internationalist she has an alarming tendency to believe that a command of English is the mark of a civilised being, and she's not above stereotyping foreigners - seeming, for example, to be unaware of the fact that there are nearly a million Christians in Iraq (note - this originally read 'three million' - got from an old encyclopedia - the exact number seems a little uncertain).

22/8/2000 - "The Edinburgh Festival much increases my hatred of humanity"

29/8/2000 - on computer helplines - "they are exorbitant replacements for free information websites; they are based in foreign countries and haunted by alarming pronunciation mutations" Do we detect a hint of xenophobia ?

17/1/2001 - on rebranding. "Private individuals should model their behaviour on the sparkling examples offered by government and industry. Sadly, the opportunity to poison, swindle, murder and mislead thousands of complete strangers has never come my way". But you can poison their minds as best you may.

2/2/2002 - the online chat. In which we detect a self-aware, courteous and sensitive individual. Maybe the Guardian is where Ms Id comes out to play.

24/8/2002 - Edinburgh is really good, although "Boringly, the cobbles of Auld Reekie are not running with Sassenach blood"

25/11/2002 - Polly Curtis reports - "Renowned Scottish novelist to teach at St Andrews. Speaking to EducationGuardian.co.uk today, she said she intended to work 60 hours a year at the university." Can I have a job there please ?

9/12/2002 - Germany is so civilised that she can address an audience in English. "Two generations ago, they allowed themselves to let racist pride, paranoia and greed force them into appalling crimes on a worldwide scale. Now they're looking at the UK and the US and recognising all the symptoms of the same disease." I wonder if she told her German audience why Bush and Blair are like the Nazis.

10/1/2003 - war turns Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheyney, Kissinger on. I don't know why, but when AL gets down and dirty with middle aged white enemy males it makes me feel uncomfortable. Perhaps she just seems to get into it too much. Her dreams she daren't remember - or tell us what she's seen.

"Every woman loves a fascist
The boot in the face, the brute
Brute heart of a brute like you
"

13/2/2003 - war turns Bush and Blair on.

7/5/2003 - Blair prays - "If innocent civilians weren't intended to die, then Thou wouldst have saved them - and made them proper Christians." You see, all Iraqis are Muslim.

10/6/2003 - "Iraqi children are also having fun, scampering about between the cluster bombs"

10/7/2003 - Depleted uranium - our gift to Iraq

13/8/2003 - She's been away to civilised Europe and isn't glad to be home. But it's not long before she's settled in. Add to this the liberation that wasn't, the democracy that isn't and the glee on the New York Stock Exchange when 200 or so imaginatively armed US troops take hours to kill four Iraqis (one of them a teenager) and you'll realise that we're living in a world of fun.. I think we're referring to the deaths of a teenager with a Kalashnikov and two renowned psychopathic murderers. So unfair of those Americans not to give them a sporting chance.

14/8/2003 - At the Edinburgh Festival, where "the most important, moving event so far has been a reading and discussion from Anthony Swofford .... a marine in the "first" Gulf war, (who) explained how his feelings would not allow him to be a marine now. "

Funny how caring liberals never consider that a war counts unless the west is involved. The First Gulf War was of course fought between Iran and Iraq. Over a million died. Bush Senior's war was the Second and Bush Junior's the Third. No matter.

10/9/2003 - counting pints of Iraqi blood. For a full fisking click here.

8/11/2003 - how to be a writer. Miraculously, no depleted uranium nor hatred of Bush/Christians/reality TV appears to be required.

20/12/2003 - What new topic will she write about today, we wonder ? The legendary plastic Thanksgiving turkey trots out.

7/1/2004 - "let's not even talk about Gulf war syndrome and depleted uranium". If only.

10/1/2004 - on her countrymen, "administrators and cannon fodder for the empire, enthusiastic slave traders and killers with a centuries-long tradition of lunacy and genocide"

Ms Kennedy is certainly following one of those traditions.

11/2/2004 - "you've got to justify every drop of blood spilled by US and UK foreign policy. Don't think of mercy or justice."

18/3/2004 - "turning Iraq into an almost inconceivable hell ..." As compared to the conceivable hell of the previous Iraqi administration ?

7/4/2004 - "we didn't want to evaporate Iraqi civilians or irradiate Afghan infants, but our government made sure we still did. "

Sometimes I Wonder

If I'm getting too wound up by the bad things I see on the streets, read of in my local paper, hear on the BBC. Am I becoming obsessive, consumed with bitterness and hatred ? Am I cracking up ?

Then I read A L Kennedy. There's always someone worse off than you.

Self Hating White Liberals Part 126 - AL Kennedy

She's a grown woman (38 next birthday) and a writer of some repute - though God knows why if this is anything to go by :

"So, the lean and noble figure of Alastair Campbell jogs away from No 10, a whole new selection of profitable marathons opening up, and the luscious and reliable figure of Mandy slips back in. Doesn't it all impregnate you with confidence and pride? "

Uh ? Campbell lean and hungry maybe ... Mandy ? luscious ? reliable ? Why not stick to the tried and tested cliches if you can't find a striking adjective - Mephistopholean is always reliable - unlike Mandy. Sounds as if she's composing an ad for a gay contact mag. And as for being 'impregnated' with confidence and pride - come on, lecturer in creative writing - 'marinaded' would surely do as well if you're just chucking any old words in there. Or think your favourite restaurant and try 'drizzled'.

Surely the day she put this Guardian piece together she was suffering from the ailments described by Christina Patterson in an Independent interview.

"Almost her first words are to request that the harsh office lights be turned off. She speaks in a voice that's barely a whisper and sips water frantically as if trying to quench some terrible thirst."

Sounds like the mother of all hangovers to me, but I may be being unfair - she suffers with a twisted spine.

Here we go - her problem is the blood on Tony Blair's hands.

"I am willing to ignore the blood spilled as a result of Blair's transport policies, Blair's health policies and Blair's decisions relating to arms sales and the escalating bloodbath that is Afghanistan. This leaves me with only Iraq." Cheers, AL. Decent of you to ignore the blood spilled by his increases in NHS spending. Let's stick with Iraq, then.

We won't count the Iraqi servicemen killed "because the ones the CIA couldn't buy off beforehand were, therefore, Evil and deserved to die" - thank the Lord that some noble Iraqis resisted the CIA dollar and fought on ! Didn't Saddam put Republican Guards behind front-line troops to shoot any deserters ? The CIA must have spent a lot, as the vast majority of the Iraqi army survived and have melted back into civilian life. A proportion of them are attacking and killing our soldiers.

There follows some pleasant counting of the possible number of pints of civilian blood spilled during the war - "estimates of the completely dead vary between 37,137 and the much more comfortable 6,118". For 'comfortable' read 'accurate' - there is almost no upper limit to the civilian toll you can find on the sort of websites where Michael Meacher does his research.

Now we come to the bit that makes this Caucasian's blood boil - all eight pints of it.

"Now one wouldn't want to be racist about this, but Iraqi blood does seem to matter a good deal less than more civilised, more Christian, more Caucasian blood. "

How true. How very, bloody, true. Damn right it does, to a self-loathing liberal.

As long as white people aren't spilling it, ANY amount of Iraqi blood can be spilled and you won't give a damn, let alone pick up a pen to write about it.

No one knows how many people died in Saddam's prisons, tortured and without trial. Most estimates are around 200,000. New mass graves, sometimes containing small children, are being uncovered.

Sorry. You don't count. You see, we're really more interested in whether 'the West' killed you. And they didn't.

Sure, it's sad you're dead, but we're campaigning for truth and justice here - got to stay focused on the important things. We're the good people - we care. And our campaign isn’t about you – it’s about us.

‘Not in My Name !’ In Saddam’s name – fair enough. Suddenly we don’t want to count bodies anymore.

The wrong people killed you. Maybe we can say the Americans or British sold Saddam the weapons used - give you a bit of recognition. That's what we did with the million dead in the Iran-Iraq war - focused on some technology sales and a few photos of Rumsfeld with Saddam. So they didn't die in vain. Got several Guardian articles from them. But get real – one Iraqi child with his legs blown off by a Raytheon missile is worth more to us than any number heaving out their last breaths, lying in their own blood, vomit and faeces in one of Saddam’s torture chambers. You see, that won’t have been done ‘in my name’.

She’s not an isolated case of course. Her ideas are those of her class – Warwick Uni, “Community Arts Worker”, “Writer in Residence for Hamilton & East Kilbride Social Work Department” (could you make it up ?), and now a college lecturer. Her gums have been clamped firmly round the nipple of the despised state all her life.

Forty years ago Kennedy would have been writing about Sharpeville while ignoring the atrocities in the Congo. In 1947 she’d have written about Amritsar while half a million died in the Punjab.

And today we can be sure that she won’t tell us about Congo massacres, Nigerian conflict, violence in the Philippines, Indonesia, or any other ‘non-Caucasian’ deaths. Unless, of course, she can use those bodies as weapons in her own – and the Guardian’s - dirty little war.
