Ship Deserts Sinking Rat

The Labour Party are distancing themselves from him.

Former ministers are putting the boot in.

Now Polly Toynbee has faced reality :

"Self-destructive and bungled tactical ploys mark the Brown era .. there are no ideas, no politics and no breath of life left"

I commented on her piece that this was the high-water mark of the 60s cultural revolution, and that's what I believe - but I don't expect to see the Tories rolling back the waves any time soon. With a few noble and notable exceptions, they are products of that culture themselves - and their libertarian wing don't believe in anything but 'do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law' anyway.

No, I think what'll roll it back will be 'events, dear boy, events'. Probably some not very nice ones, too. The Gods of the Copybook Headings will have to limp up to explain things once more. Don't expect things to happen at once. Even now, Harriet Harman is tweaking up some exciting new 'equality legislation' on the bridge of the Titanic. Word from the engine room takes time to get there. In the words of the late Jim Morrison :

This is the end,
Beautiful friend, the end
This is the end,
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end

Ship Deserts Sinking Rat - brilliant line LT!

It is deeply satisfying watching them tear each other apart. Though it would be nice if they could actually do something positive. Like call an election and give the public the chance to kick them while they are down.

Alas, I pinched the line from a Guardian commenter whose name I forget ...

It seems that CiF is going into clinical denial, with established posters not only being deleted but banned right, left and centre (if you'll pardon the expression) for failing to toe the party line. The Heresiarch has an interesting background post on this.

I have always imagined the CiF moderator to be young woman called Claire, doing an internship at the Graun in her gap year, before going up to Oxford to read PPE. Claire, alas, is terribly shocked by some of the nasty things written by commenters. I mean, how could they?

On the subject of posters being banned from CIF, there has been an utter bloodbath of late. Sceptical ex-lefties (I'm still around but being deleted like buggery) , "decent" leftists, cynics like the excellent Monkeyfish et al, have been all but exterminated.

A number of the wits who Laban noted in his "CIF Cricket" post have also taken the pledge to go nowhere near the place again. Try Cif thread refugee for details.

The "high water mark"? Oh Lord I wish it were so. But I fear that an astounding amount of damage is yet to be done. Remember 1945 and 1918 were the bloodiest years of the twin catastrophes.

If Polly Toynbee is facing it, it can't be reality. Reality must have slithered onwards.

Jeez, Laban, I HATE it when Kipling is right and depressing.
