"basic Labour values"

Not long ago NuLab MP Tom Harris wrote a surprising post - surprising because I agreed with pretty much all of it (I do think bringing up children is itself a career - or a vocation - but then I'm a Sayyid Qutb disciple on some things. Everybody who can should get an education - it's a good in itself).

Teenage girls shouldn’t be having underage sex. Why? Because it’s wrong.

Teenage girls shouldn’t choose to have babies as an alternative to getting an education and a career. Why? Because it’s wrong.

Parents shouldn’t teach their children that a lifetime on benefits is attractive or even acceptable. Why? Because it’s wrong.

(Please assume all the usual caveats: some people have no choice but to claim benefits, lots of single parents do a great job, etc.)

Being accused of agreeing with the Daily Mail’s agenda is not the worst thing my critics can say about me. Being accused of accepting the current appalling state of affairs, of pretending that the concepts of right and wrong are meaningless - that is far worse than being accused of pandering to the right.

And, of course, it is a complete load of ******** to suggest that the ordinary working class people of Glasgow South and in hundreds of other constituencies throughout the country don’t agree with me. The most vociferous critics of the dependancy culture and of deliberate worklessness have always been those who live in the same communities, those who resent paying their taxes to help other people waste their lives.

Lancastrian Labour councillor Paul Cotterill wants him thrown out of the Labour Party - "on (the) basis that he is an objectionable fool and is out of keeping with basic Labour values, as evidenced by this post".

I had a read through some of the responses to that on CIF yesterday.

Looks like the CIFfers don't like that morality stuff up 'em Mr Mannering.

He's trying to control what women do with their bodies or something.

you will find a few recommendations about what to do about single mummery inviting your comment

(a) deprive a single mother of child benefit if she cannot produce a marriage certificate

(b) fine the single mother for producing an illegitimate baby, say £1000, if she does not name the father

(c) require her parent(s) to pay this sum if she cannot or will not

(d) fine the father of an illegitimate child a sum of money, say £1000

(e) require the parent(s) of that father to pay this sum if he cannot pay it himself

(f) require that the mother give up the child for adoption before more lives are ruined

If he had said something like this twenty five years ago I would tip my hat to him.

there were people who did say things like this 25 years ago but they were ignored by, guess who?

I thought the current economic crisis might cause a real reform of the NHS but I am not so sure now.

Even five years ago he would have been yelling 'fascist!' at anyone even approaching the tone of his comments.

As for that clown Cottrill, he wouldn't know a "basic labour value" if it came up to him in the street and mugged him.

My suspicion is that radical Islam in the UK is far more fuelled by New Labour (non) values and social liberalism than it ever will be wars in Iraq or Afghanistan or neoconservatism.

The way I see it is that when most Muslims originally came to the UK forty or so years ago this was a country not incompatible with their beliefs - family orientated, pro-life, conservative, Christian.

That hegemony was pretty much there until New Labour - even if large quantities society as a whole had lost its moral compass, at least the state had not.

But New Labour have thrown the moral compass out the window, either deliberately or by accident, and all of a sudden the fruits of democracy look very rotten. Gay "marriage" and adoption, abortion on demand, mass illegitimacy, children given contraception, radical feminism shaping family policy...

Is it any wonder there is Muslim separatism? Is it any wonder that the children of the people who threw off the burqah are putting it back on? I can't say I wouldn't.

Some Muslims are saying that Democracy is the god that failed. As a Catholic, part of me sympathises, but then I would say we have never had democracy, or at least that democracy is only a reflection of an underlying culture.

So perhaps formerly moderate people of Muslim extraction find themselves in bed with the violent radicals, but only as a response to the radical violence that has been done to modern society by New Labour.

That's all fine, but I think you would have to charge £2,500 for an abortion otherwise there won't be any babies but there will be queues round the block at your nearest baby abbatoir.

Laban,

Mr. Harris's endurance as a political philosopher is a marvel to behold.

As someone who like to think they know the ground in the west of Scotland, I'd almost swear Tam was trying to shore up his vote in the parish of Christ the King in King's Park, the most populous parish in Scotland, just before a possible General Election.

That state of affairs wouldn't go on for long. Pretty soon they would work out that it was far cheaper not to get pregnant in the first place.

And if we manage to stop the teenage baby mealticket syndrome, more of the families who are being taxed out of existance would be able to have the children they would like to have.

In Spain they give a lot less money to professional single mums (aka parasites) and therefore do not have very many-.
However babies don´t die of starvation or any other scare story.
Why can´t we try this here?

In a sense he has no values at all.
