Insensitive Golliwog Display Horror

The BBC report is pretty deadpan - you have to see the linked BBC video to get the full horror.

"West Mercia Police said the toys were seized under section 5 of the Public Order Act which makes it an offence to display anything which could be deemed as threatening, abusive or insulting."

Section 5 is the law which did for the late Harry Hammond, God rest his soul.

Racism is in the eye of the human beholder. We are mere stuffed toys that have had the misfortune of rising to prominence in an age of human racism, and have been implicated by virtue of our name, which is much older than the offensive term "w*g" and entirely unconnected to it in derivation; and our appearance, which has nothing to do with real people but which represents an archetype of the Black God c.f. Shiva, Kali, Mahakala, Shri Devi, etcetera. Our role in childrens' literature was exclusively heroic. Anyone who is about to cite the example of "Here Comes Noddy Again" should first actually read the book and see what a selfish road-hog he was being, and why he had it coming to him. Down with the Noddies! Up with the Golliwoggs!
