Aiieee !!

My daughter (14) was shopping in the big city with her friends on her day off school. There was a demo on ...

Came back festooned in Unison sashes and waving an NUT flag ...

"Dad - it was great ! We wore the sashes as headbands and loads of people photographed us ! We were interviewed twice ! What do we want ? Fair Pensions ! When do we want them ! Now !"

Oh dear oh dear ...

Seems common practice for the unions. They were doing the same thing in Oxford, pulling in school pupils. 90% of the marchers were either kids on the day off from school, rich students who enjoy patronising people, and middle class socialists.

Hmmm.

Shouldn't you have indoctrinated her by now?

Ross makes a good point, Laban. Why didn't you integrate 'The Abolition of Britain' into her bedtime reading when she was younger?

I was under the impression that it was the hint of a tentative shuffle in the direction of "fair pensions" (i.e. bringing over-generous public sector pensions closer to those enjoyed by us private sector types) that made the sponging bastards kick off in the first place.

In fact, I think a more honest chant would be...

"What do we want? Preferential Treatment! When do we want it? Now and forever!"

DNA will out. At least you now know who you can pass your Collected Works of Ted Grant on to.

Is there a correlation between the decline of private sector final salary pension provision and house prices?
Perhaps if private sector workers had valued their pensions properly and made that clear in wage negotiations they wouldn't be so keen to remove decent retirement pensions from others.
Finally, if the public sector workforce is really overpaid and underworked, isn't that an admission of poor career choice by, for example, phoneshop employees - can selling goods and services within an economy really be wealth creating?

Ha! Let's hope she doesn't denounce you to the authorities à la Pavlik Morozov for sniggering at the jokes of Top Gear presenters.

Probably everyone else in the parade understood the issue no better than she did.

Hey,

I wanted to suggest to you a website for expatriates in the world. (linkexpats.com). you may need to put it in your list of links, it may be a bit helpful for your blog visitors...

Thanks
James

Scrap the buggers' defined benefit pensions and put them on NEST - they thought it good enough for others, let 'em use it themselves.
They were handmaidens to the Labour government - they must live with the consequences.

And you of course immediately sat your offspring down and explained to her the true cost to her future of what she has demanded today, right?

If not, get the spreadsheet out and show her how much money will be taken from her in taxes, and how little she will have left for herself, and ask her how she thinks she'll save from that for her own pension.
