A pity. The town that produced Scotland's two greatest writers - William McGonagall and Al Kennedy - has lost its civic pride.

Do you really think that AL Kennedy is one of Scotlands greatest writers?
I can't say I know much about Scottish writers, but Kennedy's articles in the Guardian are pretty ill-informed, and "Day" seems a little over-worked for my tastes.
She is certainly fit to be ranked alongside that other great Dundonian, McGonagall.
When we lived in South Australia we were very struck that the councils installed big bins at public parks and had them emptied during the weekend, so that litter just didn't accumulate.
