Leafy, white and conservative

Billy Bragg is the archetype of all those right-on rebels or PC exemplars who, when the kids come along, up sticks from the vibrant multicultural melting pot of the city to a leafy, conservative area.

The Bard of Barking is touring yet again.

"Coming from Barking as I do, the fact that the BNP are now the main opposition party in the area is a source of deep disappointment."

He's coming from Barking alright, but where's he going ?

Let's compare the average primary school league table results for Barking and Dagenham :

With the results for Burton Bradstock CoE Primary in leafy Dorset, where the most multicultural feature is the occasional Gambian drummer performing at the school.

The kids must be heading for secondary level by now. My money's on this little place up the road.

Burton Bradstock is a lovely place and Sherborne an excellent school.

The increasingly tediously right-on Telegraph anxious to maintain its Notting Hill quotient had a piece on Mr Bragg last weekend. If that was not bad enough this Saturday's edition has Mariella Frostrup telling us about her weekend (worth reading though for the insight it (probanbly unintentionally) gives.

Burton Bradstock gets leafleted regularly and we always pop a copy of Freedom through Billy's letter box every month so he can keep up to date with events in Barking.

Keep an eye out for his reaction when he finds out we have a candidate standing in the local elections in May 2007 in his ward.

Oh to be a fly on the wall!!

20 odd years ago Smash Hits magazine went through a period of giving joke names to pop personages. Billy Bragg was known as Lord William of Bragg. Somehow knowing he lives now this seems prophetic rather than comical.

Billy wants a socialist republic where everyone can live in wealthy, leafy villages in Dorset and sent their children to top private schools. While working hard to bring this about, it would be churlish to deny him the right to be "an early adopter".

Billy Bragg's one of those rare people that I actually come close to hating purely on political grounds.

What was that song? "Goodbye to the Union Jack?" A disgrace.

Grin. Lovely area. I wouldn't mind living there myself.
