Whether you think the sources quoted have been endangered. Personally I doubt this. Where there is a clear and present danger to the source (as with the Isreali sources quoted in your link to the cable on the organised crime problem there) Wikileaks & their media partners redacts the names.

2. Whether you accept that diplomatic correspondence is uniquely privileged. This I think is also doubtful, particularly in the US context. The phone logs of the US Treasury Secretary, and other senior members of the Executive, are disclosable under US FoIA legislation within months of the calls being made. If details of their deliberations are already partially revealed, why should the tittle-tattle of diplomatic exchanges (intersparsed with the odd revealing morsel) remain exempt from disclosure for decades to come ?

3. The clincher is whether you think US foreign policy, since the collapse of the USSR and more particularly since 9/11, is essentially benign in both what motivates it, and its effects. I'm no longer willing to grant the US a free pass on this one. Bush 2 in particular left a trail of havoc in his wake, and if the mindset that led to the Iraq adventure is discouraged as a result of Wkileaks' disclosures, then the ends do, in this case, justify the means.

For once,I think both yourself and the great Dalrymple are sounding a duff note on this issue.Marknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187043.post-7158708461473613822010-12-09T22:22:30.265+00:002010-12-09T22:22:30.265+00:00I think the "lodges" are Islamic (often ...I think the "lodges" are Islamic (often Sufi) societies - lodge as in 'Masonic lodge'.Labanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12031578024191117985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187043.post-42854719607001028062010-12-09T21:33:52.157+00:002010-12-09T21:33:52.157+00:00Blimey!
