These seedy shops used to dot London, windows full of lurid magazine covers for the likes of 'True Detective'.<BR/><BR/>They were, in fact, fronts for selling porn mags under the counter, but I didn't realise that at the time. I only knew of and was drawn to the stacks of musty, furtive New English Library pulp - interestingly enough, echoing the name of Spillane's first major publisher, New American Library.<BR/><BR/>'I, The Jury' was definitely the exemplar of what back-blurb writers then called 'two-fisted tales'.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
